Toto’s Character Development in Gomorrah (2008)
Gomorrah, directed by Matteo Garrone, is a story about Italian organized crime. One character that had a huge character development in this story is Toto (Salvatore Abruzzese). Character development is “the patterns through which characters move from one mental, physical, or social state to another in a particular film” (Corrigan, Timothy 245). In the beginning if Gomorrah, Toto was just a grocery delivery boy. However one he gets entangled with the organized crime he changes completely. He shows many “internal changes” throughout Gomorrah. An internal change, “measures character changes from within” (Corrigan, Timothy 245). Another internal change he goes through is he becomes a murderer. He helps kill an innocent woman that he used to work for. He also leaves behind all friends to become part of the gangs. Toto tells one of his friends, that they are no longer friends, they are enemies, because he is part of the gang.

One character change that Toto goes through is being a grocery boy, to being a mobster. Toto represents many of the young gangsters in Italy. Which is part of character development, “certain character types reflect recognizable traits and actions derived from cultural, historical and cinematic conventions” (Corrigan, Timothy 244). He first gets the mobs attention when he returns lost drugs to them. Then he asks to join the gang. His initiation is that he has to get shot with gun, wearing a bullet proof vest. When he does get shot it leaves a bruise. After his gang initiation, Toto thinks of himself as a man. He then runs around with the mob, but once gets stopped by his mother. Which proves that he is not a man. Many people become part of organized crime when there is such a high rate in a community (Gomorrah).

Toto also goes through a few internal changes. Toto also shows regressive character development which, “indicated a lose of or return to some previous state or a deterioration from a present state” (Corrigan, Timothy 244). In the movie Gomorrah, Toto becomes a murderer, which many would agree that he shows regressive character development. He kills one of his customers. Even though that customer is just an innocent woman. Even though he does not want to do it at first, he gets pulled in by the other gangsters. He gets scared and he says he’ll think about it. Then he does aid in killing her. He does not care about her life. If he did he would have not killed her. (Gomorrah).

“Young Toto and his friend are being separated and calmly discuss the reality of the situation; soon they will be enemies and one of them might eventually have to kill the other. Then without emotion, just a quick and simple hug, they go their separate ways. For Toto this is just another rite of passage in a far-from-innocent childhood, like when he and other young boys don a bullet-proof vest and take a pistol shot at close range to determine their worthiness as potential young criminals” "Gomorrah."
He pretty much puts up a brick way and stops his old life. He no longer cares about his friends, his work. His life becomes the gang which leads to many bad things. When people join gangs they become indifferent to everything else except the gang.

Toto may have not changed that much externally, but he did change internally. His internal change was not for the good. He left his friends and family behind, and he became a killer. His character had a regressive character development, instead of changing for the good he changed for the worst. Gomorrah shows many people different character change.
